CedThumbnails show Related Stories Under Each Post, it is a small widget that appears under each post, linking to related stories from your blog archive, CedThumbnails links to stories that are relevant and interesting to readers of a particular post, keeping them engaged with your blog, and increasing your traffic!

Joomla 3.0.4 or higher.

CedThumbnails search related posts using one of the following method:

When the related articles are found, CedThumbnails will try to locate an image in each and create a thumbnail out of it.

For existing user of cedThumbnails the update will display in the Extensions Manager under Updates. If you do not have this currently installed, you can click the link below and install as normal via the Extensions Manager.

see https://www.galaxiis.com/cedthumbnails-showcase/

Only picture of your root server can be re-sized. JImage do not support handling of remote file. If your articles, in introtext or fulltext, have images not located on your Joomla host, all these images will be replaced by the default image.

It is recommended to set up all your Joomla modules without cache, till the desired result is achieved and then to switch it on.

The function that detect images in your articles is now clever and now support better fallback. It now support Joomla articles metadata (intro image and full article image). With the first option selected the system will always find at least one image to render as thumbnail. Priority is from left to right.

If no images are found, despite going through intro text, full text, intro image and full article image, the system will fallback to a default image that can be set up per modules/plugins.

All 3 CedThumbnails modules and the CedThumbnails plugin have a tab call "Resizing" that let you choose the best strategy when re-sizing image larger than the size of thumbnails you have set up

Under this Tab you will see the following:

The original picture displayed is 300 x 352 pixels

There is 4 ways to re-size (mostly scale down) images, if you decide to create thumbnails of 150 x 150 pixels

  1. Gives you a thumbnail of the exact size, stretched or squished to fit the parameters. In this case it will be 150 x 150 pixels.
  2. Fits your thumbnail within your given parameters. It will not be any taller or wider than the size passed, whichever is larger. In this case it will be 128 x 150 pixels.
  3. Fits your thumbnail to the given parameters. It will be as tall or as wide as the size passed, whichever is smaller. In this case it will be 150 x 176 pixels.
  4. Gives you a thumbnail of the exact size, cropped from the center of the full sized image. In this case it will be 150 x 150 pixels with left and right black border as original image is not square.

You can select any pictures from /images or select one of those delivered as default in the folder /images/cedthumbnails as default thumbnails. This image will be used when no images can be found in your post nor metadata. The system will resacel it to the corrected size (it is always recommended for best results to create or select an image of the correct size)

blank.jpg no-image-found.jpg no-thumbnail.png no-image-available.jpg
150x112 pixels 275x275 pixels 320x250 pixels 260x260 pixels

You can decide to display or not the date

Caching location (since version 2.7.0) Cache location for thumbnails. Default is joomla /cache/.

Some 3rd party extensions like Akeeba Backup avoid direct references of content in /cache/ by adding .htaccess rules that will prevent thumbnails to be display if written in joomla /cache/, in this particular case you can use /media/

Under the menu System - clear cache menu (yoursite/administrator/index.php?option=com_cache) you'll see for every CedThumbnails module and for the plugin some entries

You can selectively clean the thumbnails by removing the desired "Cache Group", thumbnails will be then recreated as soon as a visitor hit the page where the module is published.

You can clean the thumbnails of a particular article by deleting manually the file having the same title in the desired "Cache Group" here is an example of the thumbnails generated by the module "CedThumbnails - Popular Articles" If you delete the file "Why do we use it.jpg" then CedThumbnails will recreate only this thumbnails as soon as a visitor hit the page where the module is published. To clear thing up, the name of the file in the cache is the title of the article without any special character filtered out.

Some note about reusing the same module many times on the same page or menu entries.

As you may notice under the administrator menu System - clear cache menu, there may be some entries like CedThumbnailsModuleLatest-a4783447f62d1b946f3a94d497434234 CedThumbnailsModuleLatest-a6254447f89d1b946f3a94d497434234 This is a feature, every time you change the parameters of a module (here in this case of the module "CedThumbnails - Latest Articles") there will be a new "Cache Group", this is to ensure that module with different parameters can be reused on the same page or on different page and that their thumbnails wont be shared. Every changes to a parameters will create a new "Cache Group". It is recommended to set up all your module without cache, till the desired result is achieved and then to switch it on.

Customizing layout through css Module surrounding tag, for example popular-posts can be used like to style li, ul and all child css tags below like in a tree .popular-posts li {} .popular-posts ul {}

You can localize or change any text by editing the following file

For example, you may want to change the text "Related Posts" to "Similar News Stories" to do so, edit the file en-GB.plg_content_relatedthumbarticles.ini and change CEDTHUMBNAILS_RELATED_POSTS="Related Posts" to CEDTHUMBNAILS_RELATED_POSTS="Similar News Stories"

cedThumbnails follow Joomla Guidelines and rely on .ini files for all localized texts. For changing some texts or adding a new language, just change the following files (for English)

Type File location
plugin administrator\language\en-GB\en-GB.plg_content_relatedthumbarticles.ini
Component administrator\language\en-GB\en-GB.com_cedthumbnails.ini
Popular articles module with thumbnails language\en-GB\en-GB.mod_articles_popular_thumb.ini
Latest articles module with thumbnails language\en-GB\en-GB.mod_articles_latest_thumb.ini
Latest articles module with thumbnails language\en-GB\en-GB.mod_related_items_thumb.ini

There is also an extensions to help localization http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/languages/language-edition/17755

go to Components, Localise then Translation

search for thumb, click to edit and change files. Save your work and submit it to me so i can integrate your changes in new versions.

New Language are also welcomed.

How can I set up the src of an image within the full or intro text?! The intro text is used to display a brief intro the article (usually on the main page) and then once the user opens the article, the intro text is displayed at the top before the rest of the text Using you favorite editor of joomla Editor (Tiny MCE/JCE Editor) or other, there is always a button to popup a media manager to select and add the picture
